Do you ever find yourself missing just one ingredient from a recipe? Instead of heading to the grocery store, try these simple substitutions:

* Warning: Do not give honey to children under the age of one. Children under the age of one are at increased risk of getting foodborne illness from eating honey.

Food Substitutions

  • Bread crumbs

  • Buttermilk (1 cup)

  • Cornstarch (1 Tablespoon)

  • Corn syrup (1 cup)

  • Egg, large, fresh

  • Honey (1 cup*)

  • 1 1/4 cups sugar plus 1/3 cup water, boiled until syrupy, or 1 cup corn syrup

  • 2 1/2 Tablespoons sifted dry whole egg powder and 2 1/2 Tablespoons luke warm water

  • 1 1/4 cups sugar plus 1/3 cup water, boiled together until syrupy

  • Cracker crumbs, or sliced bread toasted, cubed and crumbled

  • 1 Tablespoon lemon juice or vinegar and milk to make 1 cup. Stir and let stand about 5 minutes

  • 2 Tablespoons flour
